Today, I entered the facility prepared for work. I had a better understanding of the vast facilities at the organization and was eager to navigate them in order to accomplish the tasks for the day. Once I put on my hairnet, apron, and gloves, I was directed by Tammy, the kitchen manager, who told me to go to the side room to help Jennifer, the catering chef, with meals that had to be made in order to be catered to cafes. Jeremiah was already assisting Jennifer when I walked in and as I glanced around the room, I was confused as to what it was that I would be doing now. I didn’t know what to expect, as I worked on the other side of the kitchen previously, but Jennifer trained me and explained all that had to be done. As we worked, all of us shared information about each other, learning about each person in the context of not only coworkers but also as friends. Compared to my jobs during the first session of volunteering, I felt like I enjoyed today’s work more. I believe part of this change can be attributed to being given the chance to learn about my fellow volunteers as people and not just workers.
